Langston Hughes was a great man and a great poet. In particular he is the perfect antidote for MAGAism. "Let America Be America Again(America never was America to me.)" We should have trumpeted today's poem from the moment Trump came down the escalator. We should be declaiming it in chorus every day. For myself, I am sorry to say, I only just found out about it.
I haven't read enough Black poetry. I have of course heard many, many of the songs. I have read Black prose, starting when I went to a half-Black but in no way integrated high school in Newark NJ. James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Malcolm, Frederick Douglass (whom I featured last Sunday), Ta-Nehisi Coates. African novelist Amos Tutuola. And Whites writing about Blacks, and Black/White relations. I will be featuring Raising Racists: The Socialization of White Children in the Jim Crow South this coming Sunday in my Grokking Trumpists series.
