Segregationists declared war on the public schools in the 1950s, after Brown v. Board. Their dastardly schemes came too close to success under Betsy DeVos, allied with the ultra-Christianist Hillsdale College. Now that Ds are taking over, some in the media are ready to call these people out, not a moment too soon.
Salon: How this tiny Christian college is driving the right’s nationwide war against public schools
Exclusive: In the full-scale conservative assault on public education, Hillsdale College is leading the charge.
Classical Academies [are] funded with taxpayer money but follow a private school-like curriculum centered "on the history and cultural achievements of Western civilization" and an ambiguous mission to instill "virtue."
That is not good news on its face. Nor is it good news that this sort of thing has been going on since Brown v. Board, or that the Vast Wrong-Wing Conspiracy against Hillary Clinton began when she was still in law school, and came out from undercover busting segregated Christian “academies”.
The Good News is that some in the media have finally engaged with it, and it is getting a good response on Twitter. There are many more aspects of the story, including shenanigans not only in Florida but also in Arizona, Tennessee and North Dakota. Alex Wagner highlighted this reporting in Salon on her MSNBC show, and interviewed its author, Katherine Joyce. Please thank them.
Take note of the tangled web of Wrong-Wingers behind this, and also take note of the candidates and Tweeps opposing it. There are many more of both, if you care to look. And remember that there are more of us. We just have to show up to do the work for another eighty days, and vote at every opportunity. We particularly need volunteer poll workers who can’t be intimidated.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
