Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was asked when he was in Birmingham Jail, as in the iconic image above, what "you people" wanted. He replied
Respect.
Everything else follows directly from that. With respect granted, all of segregation and all of the rest of racism falls away. The modern Republican Party is founded entirely on profound disrespect against all sorts of groups. In our politics, Democrats and even Progressives do not have sufficient respect for the Black experience, and similarly for many other groups, even as we advocate rather mildly for them.
